Join us for an afternoon tour of three Mount Pleasant art spaces on Sunday September 14th. Non-CASV members are also invited on this tour. 

The tour starts at 1pm, and will last approximately 3 hours. Below are the three spaces that we will be visiting. Meet us at the Burrard Arts Foundation on Broadway for 1pm.

BAF Studio was opened in April 2014 in conjunction with the launch of the Burrard Arts Foundation.  The gallery exists to promote and exhibit innovative and engaging contemporary art in an environment that is open and accessible to all.  BAF Studio has a special focus on providing assistance to promising and qualified emerging artists through professional support and development opportunities, providing resources that may not have existed otherwise.  

Along with our formal exhibition schedule, BAF Studio also hosts public programming and events, making it a great venue for the community to come together and share in the Arts.

In 1999, LaTiesha specialized in Northwest Coast Native Art while completing her Bachelor of Western Art History at the University of British Columbia. During this time she became an Art Dealer specializing in Northwest Coast Art. It is this combination of experience that influenced the genesis of the Fazakas Gallery. A gallery that embraces cross cultural contemporary works. 

Field Contemporary was founded by Daniel Jefferies in October of 2013. Situated at 17 West Broadway, the gallery was conceived as a space to promote critical artistic thinking and understanding and where local contemporary artists are able to correspond with international artists. Committed to furthering Vancouver’s visual cultural identity, Field wishes to lend the opportunity for success to emerging artists and curators. The first exhibition Outside A Marble Palace took place from April 25th — May 24th, 2014 and featured new work by Vancouver based artists Vanessa Brown & Deirdre McAdams. This is now the gallery's fourth exhibition, featuring work from San Francisco artists David Bayus and Evan Reiser and Los Angeles artist Ben Sanders.

HOPPING INTO APRIL!

We have two events scheduled this April, we hope you will join us for both!

We've partnered once again with Canadian Art on the Vancouver Art Hop. The hop is taking place this year on the 12th of April. It is a full day of free art talks, tours and a Magazine issue launch. This event is open to the membership and the general public. Following the hop, we also have planned an artist studio visit with Vancouver based artist Dan Starling. Dates and more information on Starling will follow in the next couple of weeks. His visit will occur later on in the month. Hope to see you there!

Dan Starling is an interdisciplinary artist from Vancouver whose work has been exhibited internationally. He has attended Emily Carr University (BFA 2005) and Städelschule, Frankfurt am Main (Meisterschuler 2011).  www.danstarling.com

TWO UPCOMING STUDIO VISITS FOR CASV MEMBERS...

We hope you have all had a great break over December and January, we have several exciting events in the works for CASV members. Keep your eyes on the blog and website for more announcements.  To start us off in the new year we are pleased to announce two planned painting studio visits, the first one in January on Sunday the 19th with Fiona Ackerman, the second one on Sunday February 2nd with Roselina Hung.

Bearing the Burden of Doubt, 2013 Fiona Ackerman

Originally from Montreal, Fiona Ackerman is a painter living and working in Vancouver, BC. Since completing her BFA through Concordia and ECIAD, Fiona has exhibited across Canada and in Europe (Germany & France). She received an honorable mention for the Kingston Prize for Canadian Portraiture in 2009, and was included in Carte Blanche 2: Painting, a survey and showcase painting in Canada (published by The Magenta Foundation, fall 2008). In 2012, she Ackerman spent 6 months working from a studio in Berlin. The Berlin paintings, and the work produced for the exhibition titled 'Heterotopia' at Winsor Gallery were published in a full colour Catalogue available through Winsor Gallery and Galerie Steinrötter.

Currently, Fiona has a solo exhibition running at White Brush Gallery in Düsseldorf Germany until February 9, 2014. At home in Vancouver, she will open her second solo exhibition with Winsor Gallery in February 2014. This exhibition titled It's Not You, It's Me' is a series of new explorations into the studio's of Canadian artists from Montreal, Calgary and Vancouver. It will be followed by 'Amplifier'  an exhibition of her new abstract paintings at Herringer Kiss Gallery in Calgary, opening April 12 2014.

Roselina Hung (b. 1980) is a visual artist with a MA Fine Art from Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design, London, UK, and a BFA from the University of British Columbia. She also spent one year on exchange at L’Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, France. Her work has been exhibited internationally and can be found in private collections around the world.  She has taught at Central Saint Martins and attended residencies at The Banff Centre, Ox-Bow School of Arts and SÍM Reykjavik.  Roselina lives and works in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

CASV LAUNCHES 2ND EMERGING ARTIST'S PRIZE

Emerging Artist Prize reception, 2012

Emerging artists in Vancouver and the Lower Mainland are invited to submit their work for consideration for the Contemporary Art Society of Vancouver's second Emerging Artist’s Prize. 

The CASV has announced the prize, which comes with a cash award of $3,000 to encourage and support artists within the first five years of their careers.  The prize is the only one of its kind selected through an open competition.  “There are other artist prizes awarded in Vancouver, but those are by nomination only, and focus on mid-career or senior artists,” explained CASV Board Member, Rachel Lafo, Chair of the Emerging Artist’s Prize.  “We wanted to provide emerging artists with a chance to showcase their work and receive financial support to enable them to keep on working.” 

The prize is open to artwork in all media by artists residing in the Lower Mainland. The prize defines an emerging artist as someone who has completed training, is in the first five years of an artistic career and has had at least one exhibition at an artist-run centre, public gallery, or commercial gallery.  A jury will select five finalists whose work will be exhibited at a public Gallery in Vancouver in mid-May 2014. The finalists will also receive a cash prize.

The prize is entirely funded by CASV memberships and donations.  

The CASV is a not-for-profit membership-based organization that focuses on promoting an appreciation and understanding of Contemporary Art.  Members enjoy studio visits, art trips, and lectures by prominent artists, critics, collectors, designers, architects and fine art professionals from North America and abroad. Founded in 1977, the Society has sponsored talks by such acclaimed artists and curators as Andy Warhol, Arthur Erickson, Germano Celant, Jessica Stockholder, Omer Arbel, Wanda Koop, Rebecca Belmore, Stan Douglas and many others.
