Location: The Pavilion (Langara College front lawn, 100 West 49th Avenue) Von Bingen is a system of biological/metaphysical transference where the internalization of exterior inconsistencies (flute, synthesizer, guitar, and organ) produces an immutable sensory distortion in the onlooker. Licensed practitioners include Jenni Pace, Joshua Stevenson, Daniel Presnell, Richard Smith, and Scott Gubbels, whose investigations have been captured on a 33rpm long-playing record issued for sale by Amen Absen recordings. Von Bingen live demonstrations in the boisterous halls of Cascadia have left audiences spiritually ill, causing one spectator to candidly remark, the future's obsolete.

Programming Notes- Three Aims for the 2009/10 Season

The programming activities for the 2009 CASV season included some very specific aims. that will be taken forward to the 2010 season. One aim being outreach to other institutions in the city with whom the CASV had yet to collaborate. Another was to expand the diversity of media represented by the Studio Visit programs so that it included artists working not only with 2-d or sculpture, but also with installation and performance. The third, and very important aim, was to move towards gender equity in the artists and lecturers selected for our programming schedule. The global artworld has a poor track record with equal representation of both male and female artists in both commerical galleries and museum and institutional exhibitions and collections. Important discussions have been taking place over the last several years, most notably including New York-based art critic Jerry Saltz.

CRITIC CALLS OUT MOMA FOR GENDER BIAS

"New York Magazine (and Artnet Magazine) art critic Jerry Saltz has long crusaded for better representation of women artists in the art world, notably parsing the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Biennial, P.S.1’s "Greater New York" and even shows at Chelsea galleries for gender bias. Recently, he has taken the issue to his Facebook page, where a wide-ranging discussion has been launched.

More important, perhaps, are the statistics that Saltz has marshaled to make his case -- stats that show the Museum of Modern Art doing an exceptionally poor job of giving women artists their rightful place in the patriarchal story of modern art. According to Saltz’s numbers, MoMA has 383 works of art hanging on its fourth and fifth floors, where the museum presents its comprehensive history of 20th-century art -- and a pathetic four percent of the works are by women.

Specifically, of the 135 artists with works hung on those two floors, only nine are women: Louise Bourgeois, Sonia Delaunay-Tack, Natalia Goncharova, Eva Hesse, Frida Kahlo, Lee Krasner, Marisol, Agnes Martin, Lyubov Popova and Hannah Wilke. The museum has no shortage of women in its collection; they’re just not on the walls. On Facebook, Saltz lists 75 women artists in the MoMA collection whose art could easily be added to the museum’s influential art history lesson.

The list -- and quite an impressive one it is -- includes Anni Albers, Romaine Brooks, Claude Cahun, Leonora Carrington, Elaine de Kooning, Helen Frankenthaler, Grace Hartigan, Barbara Hepworth, Gwen John, Hannah Hoch, Dora Maar, Joan Mitchell, Grandma Moses, Alice Neel, Louise Nevelson, Georgia O’Keeffe, Niki de Saint-Phalle, Florine Stettheimer, Dorothea Tanning and Bridget Riley.

Now, Saltz has sent an open letter to Ann Temkin, MoMA’s chief curator of painting and sculpture, urging that "something has to be done -- soon." Saltz notes that he is well aware that the museum is publishing a book on all the women artists in its collection, that MoMA photo department plans an "all women hang" this year, and that the curators consider the entire museum as "the permanent collection," which presumably brings the numbers up a bit. He also implies that the museum may be waiting for more exhibition space in a new building planned to the west of the current facility, an option that Saltz calls unsatisfactory. Geoffrey Farmer Studio Visit - Sunday 23 Nov/o8

The CASV had an exceptional turn-out to the Geoffrey Farmer studio visit Sunday, Nov. 23/08. Geoffrey generously opened his home to our 30-odd attendees who were given a tour of the house (a cleverly and minimally renovated 1970's cottage) and the garage studio with sunken concrete floor based on Roman bath-house architecture. Geoffrey spoke of his affinity for the legacy of contemporary art in Vancouver, his experiences mounting installation-based exhibition at institutions such as the Tate in London, England, and about the importance of experience in his work. Geoffrey feels that his installations are moving towards an even more theatrical position than in previous work, and to facilitate this intention, he has recently incorporated 3-d imaging techniques to prepare for exhibitions, and computer programming to invisibly control the "stage performance" of the installation.

Blaine Campbell is a Vancouver-based artist working in photography, sculpture, and inter-media. A recent graduate of Emily Carr Institute with a B.F.A. in Photography, he previously completed B.Math. and M.Sc. degrees in mathematics. He recently received the national award in the BMO 1st Art! invitational juried competition and the Emerging Artist Award from the Contemporary Arts Society of Vancouver.

Rebecca Belmore Lecture

Rebecca Belmore's talk at the auditorium at the Planetarium was packed and for good reason - her presentation was both delightful and provocative. Ms. Belmore gave a slide show presentation in a theatrical format (with onstage assistant)that reviewed highlights of her past 15 years as an artist. In addition she spoke about her work "Fountain" showing concurrently at the Vancouver Art Gallery, and the work that represented Canada at the 2005 Venice Biennale ("the Disneyland of the Art World"). Main themes in her work are the body, feminist issues, cultural disinfranchisment, colonization, and aboriginal issues.

I walked away with some pertinent knowledge about Ms. Belmore's practice as an artist. A key component to her choice and method of performance art is the way it allows her to respond immediately and intuitively to current events and issues. Unlike scripted drama that generally requires significant preparation and rehearsal, Rebecca's theatre is one of improvisation with intention. She often creates a work on the day of the installation or the exhibition. When so many other art mediums are "slow" in production, this approach to art-making is fresh and vital. In fact, she is so responsive to the information around us, she joked that her husband often threatens to ban her from watching the evening news on television at home.

Finally, what was absolutely delightful was to get to know more about Rebecca, the woman. Despite work with typically a heavy-laden and political content, she has a wicked sense of humour that tends towards a light-hearted self-deprecation and a healthy sense of irony.

ERIC METCALFE: Artist Talk

Eric Metcalfe (b. 1940, Vancouver) received a BFA from the University of Victoria in 1970, exhibited at the University of British Columbia with Max Bates in 1967, Victoria Art Gallery with a solo show in 1968 and was included in the Whitney Museum of America Art exhibition of Ray Johnson's New York Correspondence School in 1970.

In 1973 Metcalfe co-founded The Western Front, one of the first pioneering artist run centres in Vancouver, BC. Metcalfe has worked on media based work since the mid 70s including Howard Hughes Inc., Crimetime Video Productions, Stravinsky’s Soldier's Tale in 1987 engaging sets, props and costumes, The Attic Project and, most recently, Laura (2004), a traveling installation/theatre piece, and Curtain Razors (2007).
Metcalfe’s work is in major collections including the National Gallery. He has been awarded the V.I.V.A. award in 1992, The Victor Martin Lynch-Staunton Award in 2000 and The Audain Foundation Award in 2006. He was Visiting Artist to The University of British Columbia’s undergraduate/graduate program in fine arts in 2006-2007.

Internationally acclaimed as a portrait artist, Susanna Blunt created the new portrait of H.M. Queen Elizabeth ll for the Royal Canadian Mint. The new image was created in celebration of the Queen's Jubilee and has been used on all new Canadian coins.

Her contemporary art is influenced firstly by nature, observed, collected, drawn and photographed, but also by other arts, primitive, ancient and modern, from many cultures including Asia, Africa and Australia.

Susanna was educated in Canada and in Europe. She now lives in West Vancouver B.C., Canada. She produces art in a wide variety of styles, from realistic, to abstract contemporary art.

In conjunction with Mark Lewis: Modern Time we invite you to join the
artist for a special exhibition tour.

Over the past fifteen years, Mark Lewis has attracted widespread
acclaim for his work in film. Working within a distinctly minimal set
of parameters, he often dispenses with sound and limits the duration
of his work to about four minutes, the length of a standard roll of
35mm film stock. Presented directly on the walls of the gallery space,
these works deliberately blur the boundaries between film, painting
and photography.

Mark Lewis was born in Hamilton, Ontario in 1957 and lived in
Vancouver during the later 1980s and early 1990s. He currently lives
in London, England where he is a Principal Lecturer in Research at the
Central St. Martin's School of Art and Design. His work has been
widely exhibited in Canada, the United States, Europe and Asia. He is
co-founder and co-editor of Afterall Journal (London and Los Angeles)
and editor of the "One Work" series published by Afterall Books.

As an independent curator, Fung has created important exhibitions in
North America and abroad: Crossing Parallels, at the Samzie Space in
Seoul, Korea; Going Home, at the Edward Hopper Historical Museum,
Nyack, New York; Revisiting Gordon Matta-Clark, at the Venice
Architectural Biennale in 2002; and The Snow Show Preview at UNESCO's
Palazzo Zorzi for the 2003 Venice Biennale. One of his most exciting
projects was The Snow Show exhibition, realized in 2004 in Lapland and
in 2006 in Torino, Italy for The Cultural Olympiad of the XX Olympic
Winter Games. The Snow Show presented the collaborative works of over
30 internationally recognized artists and architects, including Tadao
Ando, Daniel Buren, Norman Foster, Morphosis, Yoko Ono, and Kiki
Smith. Currently, Fung is curating the first international

The Snow Show - Curatorial Statement
On every continent, we witness how art and architecture have evolved from similar historical roots; indeed, the fine arts and architecture both find their common origin in those prehistoric wall paintings and earth carvings that are among the earliest examples of human culture. However, despite their common bonds, a centuries old schism divides the practices of art and architecture that is only now, in recent history, being bridged.
The previous Snow Show exhibitions, held in 2003 and 2004, provided uniquely compelling illustrations of the similarities and differences between the worlds of art and architecture. Few, if any, artist-architect collaborations had even been realized on such a grand scale; the two exhibitions included a total of nineteen structures designed and built from the ephemeral materials of ice and snow. The Snow Show created an interdisciplinary collaboration between individuals: one artist and one architect, working as a team to utilize snow and ice as the medium of design and construction. By eliminating familiar, stable materials, such as paint, bronze, wood, steel, and bricks, the hope was that preexisting biases, hierarchies, and principles of design would be neutralized. The use of snow and ice as a viable building material had not previously been explored to any great degree, and The Snow Show allowed participant teams to pioneer new approaches to the medium.
The collaborative premise for The Snow Show 2006 expands on the issues addressed by its predecessors, while incorporating a heightened attention to accessibility. Taking place in conjunction with the 20th Winter Olympic Games will provide The Snow Show 2006 with the opportunity to bring examples of cutting-edge contemporary art and architecture to an international, mainstream audience of millions. In contrast to the previous site, which was flat, narrow, and flanked by a frozen river, the distinctive physical features of the new location will greatly enhance the visceral experience of the viewers. The new location, at Sestriere in the Italian alps, has a unique topography that will allow the seven new projects to take advantage of varied settings, providing different levels for vantage and entrance points for each of the projects.

Furthermore, the warmer climate of the new site will shift the emphasis from monumental pavilions to projects that are more in keeping with the environmental landscape. As a result of this warmer climate, the primary building material will not be snow or ice, but water, as each design will have to take into account the effects of the melting process. This conceptual shift seems minor, yet it is crucial. This exhibition will necessarily place a new emphasis on the temporal process of aging, melting, and disintegration, aspects that will hopefully be embraced and highlighted by the participants. Monumental works will no longer be feasible; because the warmer latitude will result in the rapid melting of the snow and ice, the designs will need to make allowance for the ephemeral qualities of the material and take into account its unpredictable integration into the landscape and surrounding environment.
With a de-emphasis of vertical space in favor of an enlarged horizontal plane, the works become less monolithic, yet they may, in fact, be larger than in past exhibitions. This expansion of scale will encourage a greater sense of mystery and discovery, making possible the use of secluded, private settings and allowing for very meditative and intimate experiences with the work.
Finally, as a result of partnering with the Winter Olympic Games, the participants will consider the implications of sport and incorporate those considerations into their designs. No longer will the viewer simply be cast in the role of voyeur, but instead, each project will be able to fully engage the viewer in an interactive, participatory experience.
With The Snow Show 2006, I hope, not simply to recreate a wonderful exhibition, but to develop a new exhibition that will vary from and expand upon its predecessors and the designated theme.

Born in 1973, Massimiliano Gioni is an art critic and curator. Since 2003, he has been directing the Nicola Trussardi Foundation in Milan, while collaborating with various institutions in Italy and abroad. In Milan, since 2003, for the Fondazione Trussardi, Gioni has organized various solo shows, special projects, and public art interventions. Former US editor of Flash Art magazine, Massimiliano Gioni has published articles in Artforum, Frieze, Parkett and Art Press, and contributed writings to numerous magazines and catalogues.

In the fall of 2006 he joined the New Museum of Contemporary Art as Director of Special Exhibitions.

I am honored to be the new President of the CASv. We have an incredibly talented and motivated Board of Directors, with Past President Jane Irwin taking on the responsibility of Editor of the CASv newsletter, Megan Kalaman, Secretary, Monica Reyes, Vice President, and returning Board Members Alden Habacon, Richard Josephs, Steve Wilson and members-at-large Gloria Smith and Petra Tode-Woods continuing to contribute to this vital organization. We are very pleased with the caliber of programming that the CASv has been able to develop and are very fortunate to have Programming Co-Chairs Sarah Macaulay and Natalia Tkachev (Co-Directors of Blanket Gallery in Vancouver and the Balmoral Gallery in Venice Beach) return with plans for a great year to come. Please join me in welcoming our new board members Joanne Fink (Research & Admin Assistant, Uno Langmann Ltd. Fine Art), Victoria Miachika (President of Artpark Communications), and Siobhan N. Smith (Registrar, Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery).
